Palmer Cleaning Centres was formed in 1981. Over the next eight years, as a family
business it grew to become of the largest dry cleaning centres in Guelph. Specializing in
delicate and fragile garments, wedding dresses, duvets etc., Palmers would begin cleaning
these items for other dry cleaners.
In 1989, with volume growth and technology changes, a new state of the art plant was built
on Woodlawn Road. This plant was capable of higher volumes and more specialty work. From
garment dying, to special application finishes, it provided services for several garment
manufacturing companies including John Rennie Inc. In the mid 90's, fire damage and
garment restoration was added to the services provided and once again the business grew.
In 1995, owner George Loney traveled to Germany to look at European systems that he had
heard would clean better, finish faster and increase the life of garments. Much to his
surprise the Europeans were years ahead of North Americans and his quest to bring the
technology Canada began. Finally in 1999 the first in a series of machines would arrive.
By December the last of the systems arrived. The Miele Wet Cleaning System would allow us
to clean "dryclean only" garments in water and because most stains are water
based, more could be removed. By implementing the system into the fire restoration
service, it was discovered that 15-20% more of the smoke damaged garments could be
restored as well as achieving superior odour removal.
Because of our commitment to quality and technological changes, we are currently
researching new advances worldwide with partnership with Environment Canada.
